I have yet to read it (hope to someday), but I figured out what Mr. Breathed was saying by reading the text at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird
It’s a great book, and a quick read. Atticus Finch is the single father of two young children. Scout, his daughter, is the youngest and the story is told from her POV. Jem (Jeremy) is his eldest,a son. Atticus is a lawyer, who defends a black man unjustly accused of rape by a hateful and bigoted white man. Boo is the nickname given by the children to the grown son of one of their neighbors. His real name is Arthur Radley.
Of the many thousands of books I’ve read in my lifetime, To Kill a Mockingbird is without question the most brilliantly written book I’ve ever read. To those who’ve posted as not having read it, please do you won’t regret it. To Berkeley Breathed the strip today was sweet and eloquent. Thank you for warming my heart.
If you don’t want to read the book, you can watch the movie version with Gregory Peck as Atticus and Robert Duvall as Boo Radley.. The movie is a really good adaptation of the book.
14 yo grandson read it last semester. He loved it and we would discuss it during our car rides. Gave him a different perspective of his older brother. Thank you BB for the tribute.
I wish to award the Dragoncat Award to Mr. Berkeley Breathed for Best Tribute.…And thank you, sir… for following her advice to keep Opus in Bloom County, where he belongs.
rest in peace harper lee opus is real fan i love the fact that he kept that box in that tree it was like in the book someone (probably boo) used to keep things in the tree for scout n jem
I’ve read both “To Kill A Mockingbird” and “Go Set A Watchman”, actually written first, but “chronologically” a sequel. They are like two portraits of Harper Lee’s South — the one ideal, the other real — and both are superb. But neither is quite up to Faulkner’s “The Sound And The Fury”and “As I Lay Dying.”
Probably need to think about putting To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman on my Kindle this year. For Harper’s sake, for Berke’s sake, AND for Opus’ sake.

3 comments: first: and still bigotry rears its ugly head as displayed by the KKK in Anaheim.

Truman Capote was Dill Harris. He was a neighbor to Ms. Lee in her hometown.

Very nice, Opus. And although this has been expressed by me previously on several different platforms, again: R.I.P., Nelle Harper Lee….

What a wonderful tribute! I read “To Kill a Mockingbird” when I was in high school; incredible book that I’ve never forgotten.

Then again, Opus would be horrified that I read ANY books on Kindle.
