I don’t know about the rest of the world’s democracies, but the one here in America is circling the drain. Corporate money, cartoon candidates, single issue fanatics, religious fascists, and PC morons are turning our “shining city on a hill” into a dimly lit slum in a swamp.
Respectfully disagree, Richard Russell. There is no question that “spending to advertise in a political campaign” is “speech.” That portion of the 1st Amendment opens with “Congress shall make no law…” and it means Congress cannot regulate it.
The core difference between leftists and conservatives is that conservatives believe the Constitution is intended to protect the individual from an intrusive government through a narrow reading of the powers granted the central government. Leftists believe the Constitution is malleable should be read to allow the overlords to control our lives.
Today’s cartoon reflects that fault line that arose from an expansive divining of a “penumbra” around the Constitution, in Roe v Wade.
Curiously, opposition to “free speech” is one of the areas where Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton completely agree. (Citizens United arose when the not-for-profit entity made an unflattering movie about Mrs. Clinton and distributed it during a political campaign; Mrs. Clinton sought to have it banned as “speech by a corporation.”)
The lack of public participation is a huge problem. In my county, we had only 35% eligible voter turnout for the primary. Everyone has an opinion, but not everyone exercises their right to express that opinion in the only place that “counts.” Sad, very sad.
It’s instructive to note the copyright date of 2008 on this strip. The only Democrats with any spine over the past 25 years, give or take, are named Clinton and Obama. Satchel’s riposte is a perfect illustration, and what makes the strip funny.
Stirring up political anger and toxic thinking is low hanging fruit, Please, Darby, don’t add to the hate-filled atmosphere in which we are already drowning. I realize you may want a lot of comments, but this is not helping. I love the strip generally and will continue reading. Just asking what I perceive to be a favor for America.
Speaking as someone left of the center politically, I think this strip is quite funny. Stem cells to grow backbones is funny as hell; lighten up, organize, agitate and vote.
Thanks for pointing out the date, but I was aware of it. My hope was that Darby would see it, and, if he has any influence with GoComics, he might influence them to be more careful about what they are running—at least until after November. I realize some people love beating each other up over politics in these comments, and, yes, I know I don’t I have to read the comments, but I, for one, would love to be able to laugh at this strip without having to swallow poison. I really do enjoy many of the commenters, but the national news is horrible enough without having to see it rehashed here. Just IMHO!

Oh no. Not again. It seems every time a Get Fuzzy comic strip says anything even remotely political, it tends to bring out the worst in people online.
I really don’t need this.
