“The loveliness of Paris is somehow sadly gay.
The glory that was Rome is of another day’
I was terribly alone and forgotten in Manhattan..
I’m going home to my city by the bay.
I left my heartin San Francisco
High on a hill, it calls to me.”
And I used to dance a mean twist to ” bully”Wooly”!!
thanks, VistaBill for Wooly Bully…..brought a laugh to my eyes………. don’t remember Sam the Sham, though. But, if you say that was leaky, then that ‘s really cool!!!!
VB……………for some reason…..once I “became” respectible….and a married woman at the age of 20……..it seems that my musical tastes “matured”………
It seems that Nelson Riddle, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis, Pat Boone, Harry Belafonte and MORE became my musicians of choice. I forsake Elvis, Beatles, and even jerry Lee Lewis for the more subdued life. (??))
I remember the nights where we went to the Greek Theatre to see Harry Belafonte……………and we sat in the “scholarship section”…..and he used to do “Matilda” and ask for all the “tree folk” to sing part of the song……………..and the trees came ALIVE………woo hoo!!! what a fun night that was!!!!
what are those herbal tea remedies that you drink? I woke up again this a.m. at 3:45 and couldn’t go back to sleep for hours. A good cup of some kind o’ tea would be welcomed!!!
“ML….. I find it hard to believe that you don’t remember Sam the sham from the early 1970s, I belive.”
Story time: I lived up in the San Bernardino Mtns in a resort town called Gregory Village. I can’t remember if it was 1969 or 1970, but I think it was the first. I was working construction Mon.- Fri. and bartending at the bowling alley on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and once in a while on week nights, but not tooi late. The bar had live music and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. That summer,
(no winter music, a summer resort town) there was a band that played gigs there for a couple of months. I don’t remember their name, but Wooly Bully was in their play list. One Saturday night a gal that was a worker in the cafe came in on her 21st B’day. I was dancing with her and the band swung into Wooly Bully. I can’t remember the words to the song, but I had it down pat on themusic timing, and I did like to danceto it.. There I was twisting away and they played on and on……and on a little more. I was exausted by the time they stopped.. If memory serves me right, Sam the Sham’s band was billed as “Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs”.
ML, The herb i use (single) while possibly available up there, is strongly disapproved of. (hint, hint).
I don’t drink that before bed, though it will do the job.
But I do have a suggestion. Try “Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Herbal tea. There are different Sleepytime teas, and I have a cup of the tea with the green boxtop every night before I go to bed. I let it steep for at least five minutes. If it cools down some, you can always zap it.
It is chamomile tea with some spearmint and other herbs.
I sweeten mine with honey. It helps.
Okay, Slim, I’ll try the sleepy time tea. Can’t get the other kind.
In thinking of Sam the Sham…..
Every weekend, my girlfriends and I went to Pacific Ocean Park for the nighttime rock ‘n roll show, and of course, to pick up guys. Maybe that’s where we heard Wooly Bully…
Of course, we would spend every Wednesday night at the “library” (as we told our folks), and “cruised” Van Nuys Blvd……..Oh….how wild we were!!!! And then we ended up at “Bob’s Big Boy” for that late night snack of cherry coke and fries!!
MontanaLady, You had me wondering until you said Van Nuys Blvd., That put you in SoCal. When you mentioned the Greek Theater earlier, I was thinking Berkeley?
ML………. think of one of the pleasant moments in your life and kind of meditate on it as you sip the tea, That helps the tea do it’s thing, because the meditating relaxes you.
I knew I had a book with “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” in it. I scanned the book cover about 8:00 or 8:30 PM. cropped and downsized it and it is my avatar toniight/today!!
That’s my hometown over there beyond the Golden Gate Bridge.
I am full of joy, the Orleans County Fair starts today.
Not the oldest fair in Vermont, but one of them.
One of a very few that still have harness raceing.
If any of you live in a place where a fair comes to town, go, you’ll have fun.
Good mprning, or afternoon, whichever applies. Finally got up. I must be in training for when I move back downtown this Fall? I certainly seem to be becoming a night person again? It’s always been that way with me” Late nights when I’m living in the city, early to bed and early to rise in the country.
