Why not? I’ve been with the love of my life happily un-married for 22 years, you’re thinking is so backwards and old fashioned. More and more couples are forgoing marriage now it’s really not necessary.
Smoking, and other addictions are just symptoms of other problems in your life.if you can find out what they are and eliminate them, you are well on your way to recovery.
fear of commitment is a real thing to those who suffer with it, even when they don’t realize that that is what is going on. and the pain of quitting smoking is something that is also very-very real. Phil has had his “own way” his whole life and, I agree, he needs to “grow up”, but, like everyone else, he has to grow up on his own time-line.
It’s not the fact of getting married, it’s the million details required to be addressed first that are the issue. She just needs to handle all the arrangements, then tell him what day/time to show up.
I find it so strange and odd that people seem to really dislike Phil. I think Phil is a very regular sort of guy. And, (shudder) some people do smoke. I think we are seeing manifest Phil’s insecurity about the life-long commitment he may be making. I sure know I felt worry and trepidation before my wedding long ago. I also felt very similarly about all the “planning” of the event as well. It seemed overwhelming, overdone, and too detailed. My wife and I had a relatively modest wedding, but even that took a helluva lot of work. And, worry/trepidation about such a life changing event as marriage, is IMO very, very NORMAL and HEALTHY and REALISTIC…. I DID very much want to marry my (to be) wife…. but I still was worried and nervous about it.
I think Phil does want to marry Georgia, he just doesn’t want to deal with all the fussy little details. Georgia is the one who wants the Big White Wedding. Phil would probably be happy to go down to city hall and get it done. Seriously, how many men do you know who want to discuss flower arrangements and bridesmaid dresses?
It was not that long ago when Phil was stranded with John on the canoe trip gone wrong. Had that gone differntly, Elly and Georgia would be planning for his funeral instead of his wedding. Amazing how Phil seems to have forgotten that so fast.
Quitting smoking is easy: don’t purchase the cigarettes in the first place! Just leave them on the shelf, instead of putting them in your shopping cart! Buying cigarettes is a deliberate, premeditated act. So is opening the pack, lifting the thing to your mouth, and pushing the button on the lighter. It’s not a nervous reflex like an epileptic seizure. You’re not being forced to make the transaction. There is such a thing as free will. What’s next, will there be a “bank robbers anonymous” group for people who are addicted to robbing banks and can’t bring themselves to stop?
I hated wedding planning and made my husband do a lot of the details (except cake). I chose a dress, my 10 invitees, and helped on venue, menu, flowers and cake, and my husband (bless him!) did all the piddly stuff because it stressed me out and I didn’t care (and the other 200 attendees were his, so he interacted with them better). So glad it’s over! I’m a terrible wife.

If fear of marriage is driving him to smoke, maybe they should just call the whole thing off…

With Phil’s reaction she would be smart to call it off and leave Phil. he does not want to be married.

He’s a jerk now and Georgia had better figure out that he’ll be a jerk of a husband very soon if she goes through with this…
