Rotary phone, clothes line today;a fountain pen a few days ago. And numerous things before that and yet to come, I’m sure. These old Nancy cartoons contain so many cultural artifacts. I wonder what’s the age of the typical person that reads and appreciates these reprints.

48 here. Always loved Ernie Bushmiller’s classic Nancy. The minimalistic beauty of its drawings is a perennial reminder this was a work of love.

I remember reading a “Nancy” comic book around 1959 (at the very beginning of my reading ability), and somehow honey bees were involved in the plot. At one point Nancy says, “Two bees or not two bees? That’s not the question, that’s the answer!” I asked an adult what it meant, and was told it had something to do with Hamlet. I looked up Hamlet, and found out about Shakespeare. Who said comics aren’t educational?

I’ll be 43 next month and have always preferred the Bushmiller Nancy cartoons. Simple yet elegant, and make me reflect on easier times. I grew up with rotary phones and still love them. I’d like to see one of today’s youth try to figure out how to use a rotary phone! :)
