John Gagliardi, the legendary coach at St. John’s of Minnesota never had tackling in his practices. He won over 400 games and a few D-III National Championships.

Gags was great. He also had a policy of never cutting a player, although he wouldn’t necessarily suit them up on Saturdays. Austin Murphy’s “The Sweet Season” is one of my all-time favorite football books.

I was a fan of the late Frosty Westering at Pacific Lutheran University, too. He won national titles in NAIA and D3 while his players learned about winning in life beyond the football field. A one-of-a-kind coach and man. Attaway, Frosty!

Maybe they’re hoping that the ivy league will magically morph into the four-leaf clover league, and then……….
