The older I get, the more I realise that no one else has any idea what they're doing either... and everybody is just pretending.
When my friends and I spot one of the pretenders, we refer to them as “playing the role”. That started in university, over 50 years ago, and it still holds true to this day :-)
I don’t think everyone is pretending. I think we’ve just reached the point where we do the best we know, and we don’t care if it’s “wrong”.

I don’t pretend. When asked, ’How’s it going?’ my standard answer is “No idea. I just smile and nod my head a lot.”
