I remember adults always asking “Why didn’t you take care of that earlier?” When I was seven or eight I thought adults could schedule potty breaks like bedtime and meals.
I always let them go, one at a time…..I know it can be abused, but imagine how embarrassing it would be if she peed her pants in the front of everybody? She’d never live it down…..Fortunately now most schools have a policy of if you really, really, have to go, just go….Explain it later….
My daughter actually had an accident in school recently because her teacher made her wait. The teacher messaged me saying that she feels like my daughter waits until they’re doing something in class that she doesn’t want to do. Like I told the teacher, there’s no way to know for sure and my daughter does have a documented note. My daughter ended up waiting in the bathroom while I sent her father to pick her up.
I too have the policy (well, practice) of ‘If you ask, you go’, unless there is something vital happening — and even then, I’ll usually give the kid the break. Now, if it becomes a regular ‘habit’, I’ll have a private chat with the student, telling them that I may have to notify parents that they may want to discuss this with the family doctor. This usually puts an end to needless escapes.
Anyone reminded of the Dan Akroyd flick (I don’t recall the name of it) where he is seated at a dinner table with a bunch of wealthy old farts, and he asks if he can go to the restroom? After he is told “of course you may,” he gets an expression of relief and goes – while still seated. Funny guy.

Maybe she prefers to have the janitor mop up later.

Being nervous can sure speed up the urge to go potty. When you gotta go, you gotta go.

As an older adult with a lifelong history of urinary problems, I Do Not have a lot of patience with adults who withhold bathroom breaks for kids.
