We had two farm dawgs (‘Lifter and Huncher’) in my youth, and I had once asked my dad why they always lifted their back leg when they peed on anything, and his answer was; “so they can throw their (butt) out of gear so they don’t (poop) on themselves..” I took him seriously. The language has changed, but the purpose seems to have remained the same.
