For some time I’ve been inclined to view the whole story as an allegory. It parallels how children are born innocent, eventually grow up and mature, and have to strike out on their own. The tree of knowledge is there because eventually children have to eat from it – do we want our children to be innocent and dependent all their lives? – and not because some supernatural being put it there to tempt them into doing wrong.
I always enjoyed the little chat God had with the other gods present about why it was important to prevent A and E from eating from the tree of immortality because, God said, then they would be like “us”.
