Tricycle! Tricycle! Tricycle! I want to ride my tricycle, tricycle, tricycle! I want to ride my tricycle! I want to ride my trike! I want to ride my tricycle! I want to ride it where I like!
Grates with openings that ran parallel to the street used to be a danger to bicyclists. That wasn’t fixed until the 1980s. Also, wearing helmets while ridding a bicycle was rare before 1980.
Lucy was out classed from the get go. And despite that she won, though she probably wishes it was Patty racing and not her.
Why do I say she was out classed, was it because she was a girl racing two boys? Nope. I have tried some of those foot powered trikes and they didn’t seem for me to offer as much speed as pedal power. Charlie Brown and Schroeder seem to have had the mechanical advantage. Not that it did either of them any good.
Charlie Brown wearing racing goggles in the first panel; I guess he decided he could see better without them. I have read that in soapbox derby racing, one’s eyes could smart if no racing goggles are worn.

Charlie Brown & Schroeder didn’t wear helmets… and it looks like Lucy got blisters.

Races are always a hazard.

This strip was extremely prescient. Of course you can beat the boys at their games — but you have to become like them. Why would you want to do that?

CB looks so different in these strips, but Patty looks much as she always did.

This is still the early 1950s.When did bicyclists start wearing helmets? When did it become outrageous not to?

Well, for two weeks in a row we were actually able to read the Sunday strip. I hope that’s a sign that they got this glitch fixed.

In the start panel, there is no sign of CB’s shirt stripe.
