Wait. Wait. There is another version of this same strip that I remember from my childhood. I don’t have access to my collection of early Peanuts books or I’d find it. The wording and images are ever so slightly different, but it’s definitely a re-do. This is possibly the only instance of Schulz’ repeating himself that I’ve ever seen.
As for Wonder bread (Baked While You Sleep!), I would beg my mother for it – we called it “gooey bread” – but she rarely caved, knowing how nutritionless it must have been. But to a kid, it was heaven.
@The Old Wolf – yes, I saw the other strip too many years ago and I still have a good belly laugh every time I think of it. It was about the same as this one but Lucy tells Charlie, “Fold it! Don’t cut it! All the flavour runs out if you cut it!”
It is just the kind of thing a real kid would say.
Used o make mayo sandwiches as a kid. They were great back then, mayo on two slices of bread and just a little salt for seasoning. NEVER ONCE folded the bread over for those. Or any sandwich. Tasted nasty folding over. Would rather cut a slice of bread in half, tastes way better.
For some reason, Lucy appears to be Charlie Brown’s sister in a lot of these early strips. Somewhere along the line she got to be the same age as Charlie.
We used to make “sugar sandwiches”: spread marge on the slice then top with a spoonful of sugar and tilt it to cover all the marge. I never ate bread and real butter till after I was married.

She’s right. They really DO taste better that way, especially PEANUT butter sandwiches!

Next time, just let her do it herself.

If you must cut it, cut it corner-to-corner. It does taste different!

It’s like Manny from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He throws a tantrum about the crusts.

I remember my mother asking if wanted 1 or 2 slices. If I said 2 she would cut it in half.
