Sometimes it’s fun to see a sleeping pet jump when startled. Sometimes it’s not. When it’s feeding time and you’re trying to rub them awake only to have them jump in fright and belt you in the chin with the back of their head, it’s not fun at all.
My 11-year-old daughter is almost completely unscare-able. You can go up behind her and say “BOO” and she’ll just look at you & smile. It’s become a source of pride to get her to jump. We’ve even invited some of her friends to try.
It’s interesting how these earlier cartoons seem to emphasize more of a 3D perspective, like the way Snoopy is jumping in panel 3. In later cartoons, Snoopy would jump in a plane that is orthogonal from the reader.

Serves you right, Lucy. Didn’t anyone ever tell you to let sleeping dogs — er, sleep?

Snoopy looks like a famous (or should I say, fa-mouse) cartoon mouse in panel three. :D

The power of the word “boo” is such that you don’t even have to shout it or use an exclamation point. Sometimes it even works on a printed sign.
