Back in the early 2000s a friend’s neice started school. She came home and told us how the teacher had “this big radio thing” and put “black donuts” in it to make music. She meant a record player.
My husband & I were at a diner that had an old-fashioned jukebox. We were talking about it and records in general. Two teenagers approached us and, politely said, “We were kind of listening to your conversation; what’s a 45?” I took them over to the jukebox and gave them a quick lesson. That was actually kind of fun.
Amusingly, lots of more recent and once-popular media (open reel tape, compact cassette, 8-track) are gone, and even many once-popular forms of digital media (DCC, DAT, MiniDisc, DVD-A, SACD) are also dead and gone. But vinyl refuses to completely go away. You can still get turntables and some new music is still published on vinyl – not at all for the other formats I mentioned.
When I was young, we had two rocking chairs: an adult one and a kiddie one. I rocked the little one too far back and fell on my sister which gave her a shiner (black eye).
I was born in 1956 and this comic came out in 1953.

Good question. What’s a phonograph?

And all that furniture in the comic is worth a bunch of money since it is all antique now.

Mid-century modern decor is so “in” right now … or has it really ever been completely out of style? Anyway, it’s like modern sculpture.

I always wondered why rocking chairs were associated with old people. I’ve liked them since I was about four.

A rocking chair is a fiendish device for catching pets’ tails.

Although my parents never went in for the art deco style of the 50s, I had many friends whose homes contained The Very Furniture depicted here.

Rockin’ Chair’s Got Me – classic jazz song by Hoagy Carmichael, covered by many, including Maria Muldaur in the 70’s. Great choice by Shulz!

I bet there’s a lot more houses today with rocking chairs than phonographs. Ironic
