I remember when that kind of fan was all we had to get cool by. Lying in front of it on the floor, panting. Mom always put it on the floor, angled up, because she said the air at floor level is cooler, and she meant to stir it around. By the time I moved to S. Europe, Mom had AC. The city I moved to did not, except in large chain stores. We also have summer temperatures around 45ºC. Home AC units only became the norm in the past 10 years or so, where I live.
Reminds me of a hot spell several years ago when I had no a/c and the fan I did have was wholly inadequate. Went to a local big-box store and found the aisle with all the fans. I turned on each to their highest setting, slowly walked up and down the aisle to determine which one was the most powerful, then bought it. Not scientific by any means but that fan served its purpose for over two decades before finally wearing out.

Everyone talks about airbenders, but nobody mentions those who get bent by the air!
