A friend tried to tease me that their football team had beaten ours. Violet reminds me of her when she realised that I had no interest in football whatsoever.
I remember those big old tvs with the tiny screens. My dad was always bringing home an old one someone had left in the repair shop rather than pay for a repair. For awhile we had 2, one b/w and one colour. The colour had no sound, the b/w had a lousy picture, so dad being himself he blacked out the image on the b/w and turned up the sound, then turned on the colour set for the picture. For months we had them both running at the same time.
This reminds me of my sister, who is always truly happier for other people’s successes than her own. I one time asked her to read a poem I wrote for an event; she was prouder to be a reading a poem I wrote than she was to be chosen to read it.
I remember when we bought a 27" screen TV…in a furniture console style. We thought that TV was HUGE. Had a 13" (I think) in the bedroom. And now? An 80" in the living room and 42" in the bedroom. How times have changed!
I believe Schulz re-used this concept later on – a comparison between these same two characters and their fathers.. maybe he did it twice? I think so, anyway…
Charlie Brown earned a fortune for Schulz especially after he married wife #2. He is one of the top ten richest dead entertainers. Up there with Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon.
I believe that Charlie Brown is using a tried and true method of getting back at such boastful people. You agree with them whole heartedly. It takes the egotistical gloating out of their sails.
Violet was always the only “Peanuts” character that I couldn’t stand. But from what I’ve heard, she was based on a character that had given Schulz a lot of grief.

Would Violet still gloat about her father if Charlie Brown’s father were a stylist instead of a barber?
