We used to play Battleship on paper. It was called “Salvo” and had the same basic board grids and ships to place on it. The only real difference was that in Salvo you could make your four-space battleship a square or an L-shape.
In the early 1970s the computer programming classes at Los Angeles City College had a 3-D variant (on a 10 × 10 × 10 array) I am somewhat surprised that Jason and Marcus, aren’t playing something similar.
There was also a version based on “Star Trek” where you had to maneuver by using “sensors” into range before you could make your attack.

Ah, the good ol’ classic game of Battleship. (I couldn’t agree more, Marcus, on the “without satellites” note.)

If they are going to use satellites, they need to go stealth and keep the ships in their pockets!

We played on large grids and allowed shots to fall anywhere, limited number of shots to number of ships, and added aircraft carriers (5 Squares long)

Now it would be “without DRONES!”

An L-shaped battleship….okay, now while I realize it was only a game, that sounds as though it would be terribly difficult to move around.
