Corky: Did you lose something, Mimi? Mimi: Heer it iz! Corky: Oh! Your bagel's been buried in the sand all this time! Mimi: Kan yoo kleen it? Corky: No...I'm not even sure a bird would eat this! Bird: Watching the nature channel doesn't make him a nutritional expert on our species! Bird 2: Any bird in this town would cheerfully eat that bagel! Bird 3: Frankly I'd like him to brush the sand off.

I found some French bread that had been in the ’fridge long enough to get stale. Threw it out the window into the back yard. .Whether by birds, squirrels, or whatever, it was gone the next day.

I’ve had several birds and I always had 2 feed cups; one for food and the other for sand(grit) so the birds could “grind” their food to digest it! Grit(sand) is essential for all birds to properly digest their food.

And it’s not like the birds are thinking “I need to swallow some sand so I can digest my real food”. I’ve watched a bunch of them actually fighting over a sand spill in a crosswalk.

Crushed egg shells are good for both their digestion and the calcium needed to provide stronger shells to protect their own forming chicks.

Birds actually eat sand/gravel to help digestion. You can buy it at the parakeet store.
