My goodness, I can identify so closely with this strip… I remember my parents telling me I had to get into SOME sport to keep in shape. Tried almost a dozen, and through hard work and determination, I slowly grew to hate each and every single one, so that when my metabolism crashed as an adult, I was pretty much sedentary and perfectly happy with it.
Nowadays it’s not just the boys. My daughters used to belong to a summer girls’ camp that was pretty well-rounded, but a few years ago the focus switched to almost entirely sports of some sort (new owners). My older daughter has balance issues that make most sports out of her range, my younger one only liked participating in track (which wasn’t included), and neither of them even LIKE most sports. They were pretty much treated as outcasts until we found out and removed them.
We have thumbs, so nature probably intended for us to grip tools. We have teeth, so nature probably intended for us to chew food. We have abstract reasoning, so nature may have intended for us to plan and reason. Nature never said anything about us slamming our bodies into one another with damaging force. Too bad that has been presented as the measure of manhood to the males of our species.
Just amazing how timely this strip is 30 years later as the public starts to turn away from football (TV ratings plummeting). I guess this year politics has become the blood sport of choice.

As long as you lads keep up a brave front, and die selflessly for The Cause, all will be well! Ahem!
