    If they’re truly free-range, then salmonella isn’t a risk. It’s only when they’re so tightly confined that they’re standing in their own waste that salmonella is a concern. (With the bonus concern that the resultant manure lagoons are likely also polluting the surrounding water table and the waste that is sprayed on the surrounding land increases the risk of salmonella contamination on fruits and vegetables.) Even if you factor out animal cruelty issues and the horrific impact on small farmers and on property values around them, factory farms are pure evil.
