Don’t worry, Oliver, by 2021 there will be no science deniers left. Ha-ha.

The irony is that Halley’s comet never got close enough to even see very well.

more and more this bit reminds me of those religious right wingers claiming the world will end, or the ‘my pillow guy’ saying trump WILL be rein stated on date X- they get it wrong and just move the goal post and expect people to keep listening to them

but these sort of guys weren’t a big thing in the 80’s

The X needs to be MUCH bigger. After the gigantic fireball subsided, the crater from the impact would be about 55 miles in diameter and 20 miles deep. And there would be a few other unpleasant ‘side effects’ such as nuclear winter that would wipe out most life on Earth. Fortunately, the orbit of Halley’s Comet keeps it well away from Earth. Our biggest threat would be one of those countless comets or asteroids we DON’T know about.

There is a chance an unknown meteor will hit a satellite, shatter it, and increase the amount of space junk orbiting the earth

Portnoy is definitely a Republican. spouting off about science, but following it anyway. Better yet – he’s the strip’s version of Tucker Carlson – complaining about science and it’s ineffectiveness, but he’s still vaccinated.

IF I knew with ABSOLUTE certainty, I would rather stand on the X and have done with it.

Oh, just relax, Portnoy. Oliver is no better at predicting a “comet strike” than anyone else. In case you hadn’t noticed, the “fatal asteroid” hasn’t yet been able to hit this wobbly moving target….
