at the time this was seen as wild, but the fact was it was never going to stop soviet missiles but it led to the development of the next generation of weapons, the ‘smart bombs’ shown to such good effect against iraq.

The soviets could let the US get such a jump so dedicated more of their resources to a similar path of development resulting in the collapse of the soviet union as they had to pay for all research, the US just had to pay for the one they selected in the end.
