In a perfect world the US would cut its defense budget at least in half and use those hundreds of billions to work on Homelessness, Hunger, Addiction, Mental Illness, other societal problems. In the real world you have wackos like Putin who invade a country because they can, or Xi who wants to takeover Taiwan because they are showing the Chinese people that you can be prosperous without the “Party” controlling your every move, or Kim who threatens Nuclear War every other week because he is BatSh#t crazy. Some how I don’t think our obsession with war and its defense budgets are going away anytime soon.

Oftentimes whatever is developed is later turned into a weapon. Atom bomb is the only thing I can think of that started as a weapon and was later used for peaceful means.
