I can see how nicotine was addictive, but I truly never understood how anyone STARTED smoking. The coughing, the burning in the lungs, what was the incentive to “get used to it”??
15 years old, busboy at Charter House Motel, cleaning up after a wine banquet that had carafes that still had wine. Had a glass, found a pack of Benson & Hedges 100’s, lit one up and inhaled deeply. I woke up, laying on my back and Mary’s face came into view. She asked me if I was OK and if I needed a smoke.
And how did the VERY FIRST person get hooked on it? “Let’s see, if I burn this leaf and breathe the smoke, it makes me sick. What if I do it again and again?”

They were so good…hooked me! Fed them to us in VN for free. Might have been my fault for being in need of a crutch

I asked that question yesterday. So far, several answers about why it’s been done through history, but none about why anyone started it.
