That was a little more than 20 days before the launch of the STS-26 mission of the space shuttle Discovery, the first space shuttle mission after the Challenger disaster in January 1986.
I kind of miss those days of giddy excitement as most of us were glued to our TVs and radios waiting for our astronauts to embark, land and return. Now we all act as if these kinds of adventures are so pedestrian. Heck, I was excited to learn that the 47+ year old Voyagers now in interstellar space were still trying to call home and tomorrow night a little robot probe is going to “touch” the Sun and hopefully survive. We still don’t live in the 21st Century we all imagined a lifetime ago but there are still new adventures to get excited about if we could only just see them as steppingstones to making the impossible possible.
