When I grow up... Caulfield: See, you clip your phone to Frazz's key reel so you don't, like, leave it in the taxi. Mrs. Olsen: You can't get a patent for repurposing an existing invention. Caulfield: I guess she hasn't heard of this blood pressure medication now called Viagra. Frazz: When I grow up I want to not remember this conversation.

So, just “invent” a key reel with a phone clip on it.

Actually, I’ve seen those sold as all-purpose clips. But for a smartphone, they’re useless.
What are you going to clip it to, Caulfield?
My phone is smooth and slick everywhere…and besides that, I keep it in a case.If I could clip the case to a reel, a sharp tug might make the phone itself somehow fall out.
Why don’t you invent a phone that already has a protective layer, so you don’t need a case…and has a little ring embedded, so you can attach it to something?
Also, the more heavy-duty key reels have belt clips… which are insecure, and I don’t wear a belt anyway.I used to have a small one with a pinback, to pin inside a purse…but it was very flimsy, and soon broke.
So while you’re at it, Caulfield….

That’s a problem with inventions (original or repurposed).

I guess for those who do want them, there are some many levels of protection it would be difficult to please a majority. So put the one you want on it.

And Minoxidil was originally for treating hypertension too. Hair growth was an unexpected side effect.

Another example would be warpharin. It is used to prevent coagulation in the blood, and in greater doses to kill rats. The dose makes the poison.

I still don’t think they were awarded a whole new patent just for finding a new use for Viagra.

I can just hear the breathless report on the 10:00 News: “An elementary school janitor is in big trouble tonight after he was overheard having a conversation with a NINE-YEAR-OLD about Viagra! Tonight that janitor is under arrest, and outraged parents are demanding answers.”

Repurposed pharmaceuticals: thalidomide (under the name revlimid) is the go-to drug for multiple myeloma, a bone cancer.

Yes, but did the drug companies obtain a patent for “Viagra”, or did they just take the exisiting drug, rename it and start selling it for a different reason?
