They should at least have the common decency to feel bad about laughing at her distress.
But, as Mel Brooks said:
“Tragedy is I get a cut on my finger. Comedy is you fall into an open sewer and Die.”
Lazarus Long (via Robert Heinlein) had something to say about this. It goes something like this, humor is either dirty or painful. I believe the concept was from Stranger in a Strange land or Number of the Beast.
doc, I have to agree with you here – some of the best stories I’ve got to tell all involve personal stupidity or pain, and start to be the best to tell just after the sting wears off ;)
Not all jokes involve stupidity, with or without pain:
The limerick packs laughs anatomical
Into space that is quite economical.
But the good ones I’ve seen
So seldom are clean
And the clean ones so seldom are comical. (Anon.)
I love to tell a good joke or story on myself. I can jokingly make fun of certain of my friends and they give it right back to me, but somehow I can’t laugh at most other people’s injury or humiliation (with some exceptions though, if they have it coming.)

Karma’s right. I’ve given up reading some comics that consist of the characters insulting each other.

Don’t worry, boys and girls. Karma’s OK. She’ll just be reincarnated as herself.
(Sure are a lot of cat fans here. For the record, so am I.)

OTOH, Karma herself getting hurt, isn’t that ironic justice? (Or, if we go by GEE1A, poetic justice…)

It’s funny until someone loses an eye. Then it’s hilarious!

If you’ve seen “Quest For Fire” you’d know about the origin of humor.
