I’m surprised that there was a King Louis XV.

Interesting perspective:

1) The idea that one should clean away all body odour producing substances is a relatively recent one (requiring access to a LOT of clean water, so much that one can afford to use drinkable water to scrub!). Therefore it’s only surprising to us because of our current values. It’s simply a matter of how much things have changed over hundreds of years.

2) This ALSO doesn’t mean that the king was necessarily dirty – he probably washed with a cloth and a basin of water.

I have a Christmas decoration that’s a “wreath” of moose poop.

Well according to this page, It is often claimed that Louis XIV only bathed three times in his life. In fact, Louis XIV was an incredibly clean King who bathed regularly in a large Turkish bath in his palace. He disinfected his skin with spirits or alcohol and changed his clothing (especially his underwear!) numerous times a day.

Another reference to add to the one I put above, that King Louis XIV did bathe!

Notice they didn’t claim that Louis XIV bathed only 3 times in his life. They claimed “IT HAS BEEN REPORTED that Louis XIV bathed only 3 times in his life.” If I falsely claim “Statement R is true”, you can truthfully claim “It has been reported Statement R is true.”

The primary reason Christians didn’t bathe was because Jews and Muslims kept themselves clean. Even having ritual baths (baptisms).
