Transcript:
Alice: AGHEUGH yuck! Petey: They're just cicadas Alice. You're the one who's not afraid of anything. Alice: But these're bugs, with all those legs. EURGH. They're scary. Petey: Do what I do. Construct a distracting fantasy as a coping mechanism. Alice: do what? Petey: I simply imagine the cicadas are my own private army of tiny mothas all eager to do my bidding! They're instantly transformed from red eyed monsters into my little pals! Alice: Ah. Petey: What is- Alice: Look! I've dressed the cicadas in cute little dresses made of paper napkins! Ha ha! Who could be scared of that? Help me write their names on them. Alice: This one's darlene. Dad: Yikes! They've found cicadas around here wearing strange paper outfits, suggesting a possible species of super intelligent ciacadas. And they all had girls names, too. Mom: ECH! Don't tell the kids. It'll just scare them.

Those are awfully big cicadas compared to the kids’ sizes.

Cicadas are one of the world’s biggest insects, so… they are quite big, aren’t they? They do make a heck of a noise though. We don’t have them here, but I have heard them. Crickets are equally annoying here, so we don’t need them.

Ah, yes… The “Cicada Killer” wasp. They too are large. The female can sometimes reach a length of 2 inches! Comic related – This looks like an earlier strip than what we’ve been seeing the past few days. Alice in the 1st panel looks a little bizarre and the mother in the last panel looks different.

It looks almost like a guest artist drew this.

From 2007. Is this the beginning of the strip? I missed it at the time. (A look at Wikipedia shows that it is and isn’t the first strip—it’s redrawn a little.)
Sadly, Wikipedia didn’t have a final paragraph saying that Thompson has been cured of his Parkinson’s and will start drawing new strips again.
I’ll have a chance to read the whole series in order now (not that I couldn’t have done that anyway). A day will come when I’ll run out of ones that are new to me.
Meanwhile, the zombie strips that are now in their fourth generation will lurch on forever. What a world.

It will be interesting to see if tomorrow’s strip is the one from October 8, 2007…if so, then the strip is repeating almost from the beginning.

Buy one or more of the Cul De Sac books. They are very good.

“A cicada named Darlene” sounds like a movie; did I miss it?
Sisyphos over 8 years ago
Superbugs with names like “Darlene” are probably greasers/rockers who hang around with the wild kids. Good, upright kids will never run into them….

Funniest strip of the series!

In the eighties, I bought a fairing for my motorcycle because of those beasties. Full face helmet, too. (Actually, I think I got the helmet because of Palmetto bugs in Alabama.)

I’ve read this before, and even now, I’m at work, trying hard not to laugh too hard… Panel three… :)Panel five… even before I read the text, the idea of them in dresses has me wheezing…Then I read the text, and tears are flowing. And then the final panel, I’ve lost it!
Thank you, Richard Thompson.
