Oh, to be courageousTo refuse the call to fightTo ignore the pain and insultsAnd finally do what’s rightA mighty wind from the leftWill uproot the wandering yearsAn echoing thunderbird of powerHas arrived to wipe away the tearsPerhaps it’s easier to fall Than to try to grab the railIt’s nobler to give a tryThan simply quit and fail
I love these three panels. Each one features a different character speaking with strong emotions. Excellent. And I agree with Willy007, Notta is the star of the show. Beautiful work by Joe Staton!
Prediction for tomorrow: Notta slaps Blaze, Tracy busts in, finds Blaze standing over an out-cold Notta, holding her own wrist with a sheepish grin: “I think I hurt my hand.”
Today’s triple single-panel, single character focus brings the frenzied conflict into sharp focus. Very well done (even if the stylized proportions of Tracy’s head seem inverted to me, too small at the cranium, too large at the famous flinty jaw). Will Tracy finally barge in before Notta can shoot Blaze or slap her silly; or vice versa, with the newly assertive Blaze punching out Fallar?
Not having the color really makes you appreciate the artwork – and the ink work – that goes into each panel. I like to have the strip in color, but having it without makes you really appreciate the quality that Joe puts into it.
Wonderful art! If criminals in Tracy acted logically there would never be any drama. Notta’s overreaction is based on her emotions, rather than anything Tracy has on her. The tension mounts as Notta unleashes an open palm on Blaze.
notta’s gonna take a bullet… getting ready to slap blaze oughtta do it… she said shes not a cop killer.. tracy’s yells are getting shriller…. blaze is tired of being abused… before the slap hits the gun will be used… “battered spouse syndrome” applies… no charges against ms rise… but will blaze become an informer… and turn against her employer former? I guess we will have to wait and see.. for a time, this will be the last poem from me (lol)
Here’s the color version from Comics Kingdom. I think they did a good job on this. No green hair for Notta (as seen in the dailies here) is certainly a noticeable improvement! I prefer the colored strips, but that said, I agree with you guys that the black and white today is striking.
sorry gweedo.. I wrote it as I was reading the strip today and I didn’t think much about the “poetic form”. and I said it will be the last poem from me for a while because it took me a while to come up with the one I wrote today lol. the ones I did before I actually sat for a few minutes, ran the ideas thru my head, and created the poems around the stryline at that point.. this one was one of those that (literally) just popped into my head as I wrote it
Pardon my ignorance here. I see people writing that Joe Staton is on inks. Wasn’t he the artist anyway? I really SHOULD know this being a Tracy fan. Please enlighten me on this. BTW…the last two days looked awesome, and I love black and white as how I remembered reading Tracy in the newspaper way back when.
Well, this looks like we have an arc coming close to its end, except….on February 18, Notta told Bribery she needed two Muggs for the operation – have we seen them yet?
Between yesterday’s panel 3 which showed Notta with a gun in her right hand and today’s 2nd panel which shows her right hand raised, empty and about to slap Blaze maybe 2 seconds went by. Definitely not enough time for Notta to put the gun somewhere. Oops
Thank you,Jim in CT, and Neil Wick for the replies. It explains everything. I’m glad this forum now has intelligent folks whereas a few years back it had smart remarks only to make fun of the strip. I am glad this is a place to come and learn more or just simply discuss the great Dick Tracy.

This wouldn’t be the first time Notta hit Blaze, though last time I think it was with a vase.

The 2nd panel is a classic. Classic Notta. Staton’s inks are really cool, too.

I may have mentioned this before but this has got to be one of the very few strips that has a friendly group of trolls. Keep it up folks, I love it.

Hurry Tracey, before Notta smacks the freckles off of Blaze’s face.

Yeah, especially since it definitely appears that Blaze has had just about enough of Notta’s abuse.

I don’t usually have a complaint with the colors here, but it’s nice to see Joe’s artwork in black-and-white occasionally.
