Just as in comic books and graphic novels, the dimensions needed to tell the story. Though unlike those formats our creative team has a much narrower space to do so.____________________
Very narrow.
Remember Gil Kane & Ron Goulart’s STARHAWKS from the late 1970’s, which was – for a brief period – a two-tier strip?
Beside it giving us a bigger picture I think it helps with getting the Sunday placements and of course…. A way to stretch the story out (?). The boys have taken a two panel page approach from the Benders of Alley Oop strip book.____________________
Writing/Composing for daily strips is a lot like fighting in a closet – very little elbow room.
It’s often a trade-off between progression and impact.
To this day, one of my very favorite strips of Mike & Joe’s run remains the single panel where the Nitrates jump the “Wonder Car” into that icy lake.
I’d link to it, but finding it again might take awhile.
Thanks to all for your prayers, best wishes and advice for my thumb injury. It looked horrible when I went to change the bandage one day later but it actually looks like it’s healing well so far. It was hard to do anything with it for a few days.
I’ve been working on several things for my DT website and I made a lot of progress on one of them that I’ll announce soon. I’ll get the summary of the Notta story up probably when the next new strip goes up (Friday morning).
We are still kind of wrapping up the Notta story (which is woven in with the Bribery case) and the mention of Mayor Armstrong, but I still think today’s strip is a bit more forward-looking than backwards with the mention of Tracy’s accumulated vacation days (or it is weeks?).
How much longer will creators have to size their work for the miniscule platform offered in pulp newspapers? Are we waiting for the last dead-tree periodical to fold before mainline comics get to expand like webcomics have?
It’s crazy that they run strips so small here. Clicking to expand helps a little, but why not default to a readable size?
Mayor Armstrong reminds me of several other mayors in recent memory……… the Mayor of Amity (Jaws); the Mayor of San Francisco (Dirty Harry). Typical politicians who get in the way of professionals doing their jobs.
Go Comics colors have been quite good for a long while now. But, I wonder why the colorist went to the extra work of changing Tracy’s coat from the standard bright yellow in panel one, to the orange-yellow in panel two.(It’s almost PMS 116)
Tracy seems to have his head on straight today; very lucid answers to Chief Patton. I hope his vacation goes ahead and is a serene one!As for Mayor Armstrong, I believe she is certainly corrupt in the (more or less) conventional political sense (remember, Tracyville is analogous to notorious Chicago, my born-and-raised city), though I’m not sure she has explicitly criminal intent against Tracy….
I love talking about the moon people. It was the dumbest thing ever to write them out of the strip. I hope they reappear soon and that we see a lot of them in coming days.

Mayor Armstrong would probably prefer that everyone would forget all about her rash actions when the video came out.

Many more 2-panel strips recently, a definite shift towards mixing up the format.

Here’s an example from early in its run – Imagine what Team Tracy could accomplish with so much additional space.

Which brings up the question again — is Mayor Armstrong crooked? It would certainly explain her dislike of Tracy.
