It can save lives. You feel nothing and the color photos are fascinating. I did have one polyp which is yellow in color. It was benign. So far I have no need for another one. Only the preparation is hard, not the procedure.
Good news for us “over 50’s” is they have a new product out which my doctor recommends instead of a full colonoscopy. No prep involved. Checks for cancer in your stool. I’ve put off getting the latter done but now I’m glad I waited. No colon cancer in my family history, so I wasn’t really worried anyway.
I have a personal history of actual cancer (11 years ago), so I get one every year. Ain’t no fun, but it’s better than being dead—or getting chemo (kinda like having your whole body pressed through a strainer), or radiation (sunburn where the sun never shone), or surgery (“Yay! I actually got out of bed without help!”).
There is a new process for those who have little risk. No colonoscopy. You collect a sample by using a kit. In the kit is a long handled brush and a sample collecting card. You do what you have to do, use the brush to basically stir up the water and gather a smile on the brush that does not have to have any solids on it, brush the card and fold the flap over the card and put a label on it, sealing it. You dispose of the brush and the exam glove in the waste bag provided. Then you flush. Then do the same thing the next time you go. You put the sample card in the pre-paid even lope and mail it to the lab. Results to your doctor in 2 – 7 days. You dispose of the waste bag in your non recyclable garbage. No mess, no fuss, no prep, no barium milkshakes. NOTHING stuck anywhere you don’t want it stuck. Some had required a camera, but there is difference. The patient swallows the mini-cam and carries around a recording device and when the process reaches its end, collects the camera with a tool and returns the recorder and camera to the doctor. The cameras are for one use only. If you are at risk, get tested now. It’s better than dying like Farrah Fawcett.
