Every generation thinks their expressions are the best and the previous one’s out of date. So I’m not cool anymore. . . or maybe I never was, and I don’t care – right on!
There is a more recent and more appropriate meaning to that expression. Until electric clothing irons were invented, tailors and housewives (mostly) had to keep several pressing irons in the fire to always have a hot one. Busy days required more irons.
