I once read (can’t remember where) that we usually don’t look at a watch or clock to see the time, but to judge how long before something happens. Ex: how much longer until lunch/quitting time/my favorite TV show. That’s why we often can’t answer that question even if we just looked at a watch.

Knew a guy that had the minute and second hands taken off his watch. He figured the hour hand would get him close enough.
