I think you’re going in the wrong direction. The ‘news readers’ instead of reporters is the result of cable going for pretty faces instead of (as Wiley notes above) substance.
“… all advertising must be removed from all news sources.”
And how will you pay for the news broadcast, then? Taxes? Cable only? What’s your solution? And if you think there’s no bias in public radio, I’d like you to look at this bridge over here which I’m willing to sell to you at an excellent price!
In ’67 one of our LZs was overrun, and nearly all were killed, we found two VC bodies. The LA Times in an article my folks sent me, reported two Americans and 200 VC killed, the exact opposite of reality. Knowing over 150 men listed on “The Wall”, Viet Nam, and the lies, are “personal” to me. Also the fact that Nixon and Kissinger ran that war longer than LBJ, profitably for his MIC friends.
MIss Al Jazeera America as it was actual journalism, and covered events all around the world, from wars, to women’s volleyball.
American “news” has occasional events, but it’s mostly about getting your kid school clothes, lead in drinking water, the cost of gasoline for your gas guzzler, and the remote risk you might have salmonella in your chicken, so COOK IT STUPID! This while over half the population of Syria is displaced by war, their cities destroyed, Iraq in a very similar mess as we take back Falluja, not that there’s anything left of it. Yep, tragic as the Orlando shooting by a homophobe is, every two days, more are killed by guns in America, but the NRA controls Congress and the “media”, well the gun manufacturers do, but hey why worry, Alfred?
Excellent points made by “old timers” who were there. However, you left out the more recent tradition of “embedding” by which reporters are under commanding officers responsible for insuring that the truth is never seen, much less gets to the public. Whistle blowers are sent to prison or into exile if they report the truth.
I don’t think it is possible to be a completely neutral reporter or observer. We all bring with us a worldview colored by our own education and experience..
As hard as we strive for 100% objectivity, our own bias creeps in, whether we are aware of it or not.
News reporters and journalists are no exception.
Even the camera can distort the truth or reflect the cameraman’s personal point of view.. I’ve seen footage political rallies and demonstrations that if you believed what you saw on tv, you’d think hundreds of thousands had been there when in reality, there were only a couple of hundred people, at most.
Was that Substance “Free Zone”, where it’s supplied like “Free Beer”? Yummm! What bleeds, leads. And we are always led by emotion, so in the campaign season, believe NOTHING of what you hear, and MAYBE 5% of what you see YOURSELF. Wish the BREXIT voters remembered that!I’m reminded of some of David Suter’s cartoons, brilliant stuff showing how the camera’s view shows the vignette the producer wants to tell, NOT the whole frame.

When I saw that sign, I looked at the awning expecting to see “Kardashian Building” written on it.

No, back in that day, the anchor was also the News Director, not just empty suits. Way different now.

Yesterday North Korea launched a pair of missiles that hit their target. However all we got on TV was the Trump and Hillary show.
The news media seldom lies but rarely tells the truth.

Re: Vietnam. Sun Tzu warned against leaders overruling their generals. You either trust them or fire them.
Bush I and Abe Lincoln followed Tzu’s advice.
LBJ and Hitler ignored it.
