Like Red, the sound of that jingle meant the ice cream truck was indeed on its way….seems those trucks were in every town…loved it! Which flavor are you boys getting today?

I can’t even think about today’s strip or else “Pop Goes The Weasel” will be running through my mind all day.

Back in my childhood, we had a both Popsicle man and a Good Humor man. Neither truck had music. They each had a rack of bells that chimed is a musical sort of way. It only took a week each summer to re-learn which bells belonged to which truck. In later years a larger independent sno-cone truck parked down the street from the junior high school. No bell needed – we knew where he was going to be parked when school let out.

The first musical truck for me was a Mister Softee – which didn’t roam our neighborhood. I didn’t see one until I went to the beach one summer.

We have at least three that cruise my street every summer. One sounds like a school bell, another has a motor on the roof that is so loud that I can’t hear my TV, and the other plays a tune and then says “HELLO” in this weird little girl voice. I could personally do without all of them.

Back in the day 70 years ago, popsicle & ice cream vendor had a truck with no roof for driver, & a row of bells behind his seat attached to big freezer box. I heard the bells a block away, got on my hand-me-down bike with siren on front wheel. Chased down the truck with screaming siren. Poor guy thought a cop was coming. Twin ice pop was only a dime. Bells were a delightful sound compared to later recorded noise on a loop.
