As I understand and have experienced it, that method does more harm than good, both to the training goal and to the dog itself. You seem to obviously care for you canine friend(s), so I would guess you have used that technique sparingly, and with plenty of positive reinforcement integrated with it. But, really, do dogs (generally) have the kind of abstract reasoning that allows methods like that to be a benefit?
