Actually, it also takes years of hard work and practice to qualify as cymbal player for a symphony orchestra. I once went to a community volunteer performance (I knew the bass drum player, a professional helping out) and the cymbal player could not properly play the cymbals — you are supposed to clap them together, then immediately pull them apart and he didn’t do the second part. The other players and conductor just glared at him. The glare was obvious to everyone in the audience. Also, the cymbal player in a true symphony orchestra doesn’t only play the cymbal, he/she plays other percussion instruments as well.
