Used to know a guy who gave mini-bike riding lessons. Most valuable piece of advice he ever gave me was: wherever you look, that’s where you’ll go. So if you see a tree or a wall, DON’T focus on it unless you want to go straight for it.
OUCH!!!Reminds me of the time I decided to ride my bike down the BIG hill in our neighborhood. At the bottom the road curved slightly to the left up the little hill. I was about 7 and I must of been going a a pretty good clip. When I got to the bottom of the BIG hill the gyroscopic effect of the front wheel was too strong for me and I couldn’t navigate the curve. I hit the curb, flew over the handlebar, and wearing only shorts and sneakers slid head first on the gravel on my right side. I was quick enough to protect my face with my arm and fortunately didn’t break any bones. I ran home, crying, to the family nurse (Mom) who removed the embedded gravel and dressed my wounds.
I have a few stories about mountain bike crashes but I’ll spare you the gory details. I have no hair left on my shins. I call the trail rash scars my receipts from mountain biking school. When my kids (or others) see the scars on my upper left back (from an endo I wish I had a video of) I just deepen my voice and say dramatically, “I’m a mountain biker!”
Anyone who has traveled in mountainous regions, know about the emergency run out areas. They are designed just as Hobbes describes, and work quite well to stop a runaway vehicle…

A show stopper suggestion!

I fell like that once on a skateboard. If only I had known about Newton’s First Law back then, it would have saved me so much trouble.

Some people think that Hobbes is Calvin’s conscience. If that’s true, why would this strip happen the way it does?

Bit late to tell Calvin your other suggestion though isn’t it? Haha.
