Cats don’t take kindly to new cats. I had cats from 1980 to 2005. I had a total of 7 with as many as 4 at 2 separate times. Cats are very territorial. It took a while for established cats to accept new cats. I find it hard to believe that Mr Fluffy would simply fall asleep with the new kitten with the evil grin in the place.
