I noticed something else. The opening panel imagines a glove with the name “Lucille Van Pelt.” Is that really Lucy’s full name? Otherwise, it is depicted as a quirk of Peppermint Patty to call her that, just like she always calls Charlie Brown “Chuck.”
It’s like this Big Nate strip where someone mistakes Nate’s glove for “belonging to someone named Dustin Pedroia.” The author of Big Nate is influenced by Peanuts, so perhaps it was a homage?
“The Babe” was my only famous relative, second cousin, but I never liked ball sports like baseball or espcially football. Maybe a subliminal message learned from Lucy? Track, cross-country, skiing, or racing sports cars, hmm all involve more movement, and in the last case, a lot more speed.
Interesting read on the glove in the title panel. It give’s Lucy’s name but also says Player’s Model Trap Action. Gues that’s one trap that never sees any action.

This was in the days when the only athlete with his name on a pair of shoes was Chuck Taylor.

When I was a kid we couldn’t afford the Babe Ruth or Willie Mays gloves. Mine had “Eddie Crankshaft”.

Charlie Brown could channel Kenny Rogers and sing, “PLEASE pick a fine time to leave me, Lucille!”

Hey, its can’t be Ruth’s glove. Its a left handed glove and Ruth was a lefty.

MLB players use to leave their gloves in field when they went in to bat, maybe Willie will be right back.
