Just call the Police, tell them the store bought a stolen cane and you can get it back for free. In many states it is the Pawn shops responsibility to make sure that all purchases are either from or authorized by the true owner. From the last sentence I am getting the feeling there was not total honesty about the worth of the coin.
I’ve had situations like that before. Sometimes, it’s worth the $20 to avoid the hassle and delay. The cane could have been held for evidence for some time and to get it back, a trip to the Police Department would be needed. That roof trapdoor needs to be nailed shut or a good strong bolt installed.

Skeezix knows Uncle Walt lost the cane, and it somehow ended up at the pawn shop. But, he doesn’t yet realize the cane was stolen.
Assuming it is the same cane, and the handle really is gold, how could the Pye brothers have let it go to the pawn shop for so little?
