Many of us remember the days when companies would send stuff unsolicited, and if you didn’t return it by some secret deadline (at your own expense), you’d be billed for it and subscribed to ongoing further shipments. Postal regulations have since outlawed this practice (anything you receive in the mail unsolicited is yours to keep, free), but it’s still unclear what happens to unsolicited stuff delivered electronically—did listening to the “free” U2 album automatically subscribe you to a paid Apple service that would be near-impossible to get unsubscribed from? As it turned out, no… but there was a reasonable suspicion.
