221B Baker Street (Sherlock Holmes) is a good itinerary item, as The Chief already noted. The other one Tess mentions today is Rue Morgue (French for Morgue Street) in Paris. Since Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” is considered by some to be the first modern detective story, it’s a good destination for Dick and Tess. There is a slight problem in that the street is entirely fictitious, but I guess that’s not a problem in the Tracyverse. I’m sure they’ll visit it anyway and I’ll come back to it when they do.

I think The Adventures of Business Cat pushes the whole column down 1 row. That is why. Still, it sucks to be at the very, very, bottom of the lst. Have to scroll quite a bit to get to Tracy.

State of the World of DT

July 7, 2016Well, at least I have thumbnails done for all the characters and people that have appeared in this story so far (including the Fearless Fosdick mini-story). In 15 days, 25 names have come up or characters have been shown. Here they are. See if you know them all. (More details to come later):

    Where are we headed now?

It seems that Abner Kadaver is landing in England. Now, we just have to get the Tracys off on their trip and we can really get into the meat of this. It’s been fun so far.

I have a felling that Abner has not chance of fulfilling his hi on Tracy. Tess is going to kill him first. LOL

What a thrilla: Tracy Meets Godzilla. Oh, Tess is gonna kill ya! Europe by way of Tokyo? Let sleeping monsters lie…or not.

Thanks to Night-Gaunt49, Gweedo, Willy007, Neil Wick, Chris Sherlock, JPuzzleWhiz (Yes. Yes it was. Not even a master detective can be smart every day.) and Vista Bill for the kudos. Much appreciated!

Well, who knew that Dick Tracy takes place a week behind the real world. There was a Godzilla marathon over the 4th of July on El Rey Network. Actually, that’s the real miracle. The Tracys get El Rey (a lot of cable systems don’t but satellite does). And don’t worry Tess, you can skip almost all of the first half of the movie. Godzilla doesn’t show up very early in most of them, and if he does, then the entire middle of the movie is devoid of him. Still love most of them though.

I’ve been wanting to post this about my death list all last week, but felt I couldn’t by all the real deaths going on last week involving both Tracy and cops. Thanks to Neil Wicks’ excellent search engine, we were able to find the strip where Mike Curtis confirmed that Venus and Melies were dead, but where he also revealed that, contrary to what might have seemed at the time, Apollo and the Munro brothers are all still alive. I don’t always read every comment of every strip, and this was the first time I had a chance to see it. So how does this affect my death list? The answer is: surprisingly little. I’ve decided the last word on whether a character is dead isn’t the author’s comments outside the strip, but within the strip itself. I mean this as no disrespect to Curtis, but simply because an author can always change his mind. I listed Rocket Munro and Apollo on the list because their deaths are what one would naturally assume just by reading the strip itself, the same reason I include Flaky Biscuits, Bill “Shortcake” Mitchell, and Ed Rosato on the death list even though Flaky’s death wasn’t confirmed until very recently, and the latter two have never had their deaths fully confirmed. It’s just what you’d naturally assume based on the strip itself. I will keep Rocket and Apollo on the death list until the strip itself reveals they’re still alive. On the day that happens, I will unhesitatingly repost the death list with their names no longer on it.One thing that has changed, is that I’ll be taking Drs. Sail, Ghote, and Flash Munro off the death list. The only reason they were ever on the death list in the first place is because of comments Curtis made at the time outside the strip. One would not naturally assume just by reading the strip itself that they were automatically dead, just that they were in a lot of trouble and could die at any minute. Curtis made comments at the time that we were never going to see them again, so when I made the death list I reluctantly included them on it. Here, Curtis is saying, “no one knows” what’s happened to them, which makes it at least possible that he has, or someday might, change his mind about never seeing them again. Right now, their fates are the same uncertain state as Mumbles and Flash’s two remaining brothers, Satellite and Sputnik. The last we saw of Mumbles, Satellite, and Sputnik, they were getting into fights with Punjab. Punjab has since been seen unperturbed, so he clearly won, but there’s been no sight or mention of the foes he vanquished, and Punjab does have a habit, established even in this strip, of using his magic blanket to have crooks “sent to the Magi” where none have ever returned i.e. might as well be dead. If that’s ever confirmed, their names will be added to the list. If they show up alive again, I won’t have to take their names off the list because they were never on it. The same will now hold true of the three lost in the Space Coupe.I’m not going to repost the death list today just to show Sail, Ghote, and Flash are no longer on it, because I don’t consider it important enough, They’re just some names that I now feel should never have been on it in the first place. The next time I repost the list, whether to take Rocket and Apollo off it on the day their survival is confirmed (I do feel their names belong on the list until the strip shows us otherwise because their deaths are just something one could naturally assume), or to add names to the list (seems inevitable with Abner around, even if it’s just himself who ends up dying), you won’t see their names on it.

I think that rogerwms’s problem is that he needs to learn the difference between a row and a column.

I tried substituting the word “column” for the word “row” and it still didn’t tell me what he was referring to. It seems people switch those words sometimes. I used to sit in the row of desks on the right in my grade 6 classroom, but since it went from the front of the classroom to the back, and not side to side, you wouldn’t think it would be a “row.”

I realize that the Rue Morgue is fictional as is 221B Baker Street (Baker Street is real but the number 221 didn’t exist on the street when Doyle wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories. Later the street was extended when Abbey National Building Society built their new headquarters. Their bank occupied the place where 221B would have been 215-229 Baker Street. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is located at 239-241.). Still wouldn’t the Rue Morgue be the ideal place for the final confrontation between Tracy and Abner Kadaver?

I hate it when Dick Tracy appears on the very bottom of column one. It’s so much easier when he is on top two. Oh well.

The look on Tess’s face in the final panel tells all Tracy needs to know, if he really is such a keen observer/detective. One does not turn down the attractive and eager wife when she is “in the mood” if one knows what is good for him! Tracy may be missing “connubial bliss” for some time to come, if not sleeping on the couch all across Europe, all for the sake of watching some sappy old Japanese monster-movies (the only person I know of who is so devoted to those is Flightsuit). As Tracy himself might say, “ye gods!”

Isn’t the Rue Morgue located in Paris?

In the story, it is, but in real life there is no such street, nor was there ever. The neighbourhood where it supposedly is located is between two streets that do exist and there are only eight streets between them, crossing at various angles. I want to make a map but I haven’t had time yet. I will, once they eventually get to Paris.

Drawn by manga artist Rumiko Takahashi in honor of Godzilla’s 60th Birthday, 1954-2014.

Panels and the balloons/captions within are read right-to-left.
