Though this is a “mere genre painting”, it is in fact remarkable for the richness of content. Look at the 3 generations of poor women, each in a differing stage of life.. Granny fading (literally!) in the background, work-worn mother more prominent, and the almost mature daughter in the foreground with the b"Feathered Friend"…what a composition! I can’t laugh at it.
