No two snowflakes look alike, but they all have six sides? Wow. (Who’s going to want butter that’s two millennia in age on their toast or in their popcorn? Altho still edible, I say no thanks.)

@Templo—-I believe that I read awhile ago, that the snowflake thing is not true, especially since there are billions, if not trillions of snowflakes in a Winter season. The odds say that there are probably quite a few identical flakes. Now as to how someone found identical flakes without them melting upon examination, that I can’t tell you, but a Google search might.

And it’s generally held to be true… but no one has seen every snowflake.

BTW: They’re six sided (occasionally 3) because of the molecular structure of water…most crystals, including gemstones, have a certain number of sides or faces based on the chemical bonds in the material of which they’re composed.

No, they are not ALL six-sided. That is certainly the “ideal” shape, but “ideal” growing conditions seldom occurs.

Let’s just say that the snowflake tries its hardest to be six-sided, but due to circumstances beyond its control, it doesn’t always succeed.

And who has been around long enough, to actually know that butter is that old…

Not quite 2000 years, but the butter used for the Iowa State Fair Butter Cow gets reused from year to year. Of course, nobody eats it.

I’m pretty sure I learned about that snowflake tidbit in elementary school. We also learned that no two are exactly alike.

I seem to recall an episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern where he tasted a tiny 2,000 yr. old butter sample. They did not want to use a lot because when it is all gone there is no more.
