Around 1971, they built a drive-in where it could be seen from our house; and by ‘seen’ I mean one could perceive a tiny dot of color off across the fields. With a 16x monocular, it was just barely possible to discern what was on the screen. It’s one of the few drive-ins still going, though that could change if the real estate it’s on gets valuable enough to carve it up into condos..I finally detoured, while taking a road trip, to see the Theater Motel, which had signs on the highway. Looks like a residential motel now, and the screen’s been gone for years, though the projection booth is still standing, and the remains of the playground could tempt kids with no sense of self-preservation.
There was a drive-in in, I believe, Perth Amboy NJ that for a short while was showing X rated movies. They were forced to stop showing them as the drive-in was near a major highway (The Garden State Parkway) and they were causing nightly back-ups on the road.
There are summertime offerings of outdoor movies at various of the parks in metro Atlanta and in some of the surrounding communities. Sit or recline on a blanket with a picnic basket and a drink cooler and see a movie in the open air.

A drive-in without the car? This used to be a thing?

I’m pretty sure that by 1949, this was the only one left. And they ran “Closed For The Season” fur months a year.
