Puck: Cat as my witness, I will find this ham. Let's start with the usual suspects. Alice: We had nothing to do with this. Natasha: Tonight is our book club. Agnes: Maybe it was Elvis. Elvis: How dare you. I was with the coats. Lupin: You got a ham under those coats. Elvis?

I love the crisp precision of the art in these new style strips. And I really love the big-eye rendering of dear Puck in the last panel.

Okay, really wanting to know now what the mice are reading :DAnd i’ve either been unusually unobservant or Lupin’s arms are more expressive than i remember in previous strips. Especially loved how they were when Lupin was greeting the mystery man, such a typical cat stance when they’re stalking up us.

I think the Robber Mice are reading “Watership Down.” There is a big W in the top line and a D in the bottom line. The object in the middle look like a rabbit – especially in the book furthest to the right.

I sure am getting hungry for ham. I hope they find it soon.

I am thinking a neighbor came in an unlocked door….this is becoming a real CAT-lumbo episode…

I hardly think Elvis, having been locked in the coat room, could 1) fit under the door crack, much less fit a ham under the door crack, or 2) open the door unless he has opposable thumbs. Of course, polydactyl cats and lever door handles are not considered here.

I love how the ladies’ book club is so important that even ham wouldn’t interrupt it!

Now, we have to pull out our copy of Watership Down and join the Book Club if the girls let us.

Watership Down! What a great book! And, though it is entirely about the lives of anthropomorphic animals, it has a lot of valuable insight into human life, particularly the virtue of courage. The main characters are anthropomorphized rabbits. Richard Adams did extensive research into the lives of rabbits to give verisimilitude to his depictions of them, and one can learn a great deal about them from this book. For example, did you know that rabbits, in order to fully digest and draw maximum nutrition from the roughage that they consume, eat everything twice? Ruminant animals, such as cows, achieve this kind of digestion by partial regurgitation and reswallowing their food into a series of four stomach chambers, in effect digesting it four times. Some tortoises digest rough, dried leaves by having a very long digestive process that lasts at least several days. Rabbits manage this by re-consuming their own partially digested droppings after their first pass through the digestive system. This practice results in some very creative “rabbit insults” in the book.
