Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for September 18, 2016
Transcript:
Phoebe: Look at how the ducks gather around us. They're hoping for some bread. Marigold: I notice you did not bring any today. Phoebe: Nope. I'm not gonna do that anymore I read on a nature website feeding ducks bread is bad for them. No nutritional value. Keeps them from eating stuff that's good for them. But it's one thing to know that... And a whole other thing to see all those hopeful ducks, and give them nothing. I can't even explain it to them. Ducks are too stupid. Marigold: You must be strong for the ducks. Phoebe: For the ducks. This is the first time I've ever had to practice tough love. Marigold: Ducks are good practice for that.

Or you could just, oh, I dunno, give them something that’s good for them? They’re too stupid to realize you could potentially be giving them something else.

I would have thought the unicorn could communicate with the ducks. She has so many amazing abilities.

I like the places they wander . . . they have a very nice back yard to play in.

You should never feed wildlife. That’s a very common rule.

When we go walking in the park we take bags of birdfood and give them to the children feeding the ducks bread, explaining to them and their parents why they shouldn’t. It’s not just that it keeps them from eating good stuff – if they eat too much it can make them ill. I always hope that the word will spread, and that those kids will grow up to teach their kids to love ducks safely. <3

You don’t want to know.

“You must be strong. For the ducks.”
I wonder how that would sound in Latin?

Is it just me, or did marigold curl her mane?

@gammaguy:At your own risk. Not that it matters to me anyway. Wild animals usually follow me without me doing anything to tame them.

“You must be strong. For the ducks.” is making me chuckle much more than it probably ought to.

I was equally amused by what was not said. Everything that Phoebe said about why the ducks shouldn’t eat bread applied just as much to her (actually, even more so, since she’s a growing girl), and she let that obvious thing “just slide by.” Marigold, who had to have noticed that connection, very politely didn’t call attention to it (that’s a royal form of extreme courtesy, which unicorns are said to have).

There was large pond in a local park that has its entire duck population wiped out by moldy bread scattered on the grassy verge of the pond for the ducks. If you want to feed the waterfowl, throw Cheerios into the water for them. They float, they’re good for the ducks, and the ducks (and geese) love ’em.
