With apologies for those who don’t like recipes shared here, here is my husband’s recipe. We call it “loaves & fishes” because no matter how many we serve, we usually end up with some left over.
Leigh’s Famous “Loaves & Fishes” Spaghetti Sauce

1-2 lbs. ground beef, 85%-90% lean1 lb. sweet Italian sausage (preferably ground)1 good sized sweet onion or red onion (preferably Vidalia, if in season)3 oz. sliced mushroomsFresh clove garlic, peeled (amount according to taste)2 29 oz. canned tomato sauce (preferably all-natural)1 15 oz. canned tomato sauce (preferably all-natural)1 8 oz. canned tomato sauce (preferably all-natural)1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes, no salt added1 6 oz. can tomato paste2 Tb. (estimated) sugarOlive oilOregano1-2 1 lb. box(es) of Spaghetti
•Heavily coat bottom of large frying pan with Olive Oil. Add heavy sprinkle of oregano.
•Fill large sauce pan with water; add about 2/3 cup of Olive Oil to water. Add heavy sprinkle of oregano.
•Dice entire onion & garlic cloves; put aside. Dice mushrooms if you wish.
•Do not cut off fingers. Do not rub eyes after cutting garlic & onions. :)
•Sprinkle 2 handfuls of onion in water & 2 handfuls of onion in fry pan.
•Put garlic in water & fry pan
•Start water to boil. Once it starts boiling, leave boiling for 12-15 minutes. Turn off & let onion & garlic steep (like tea).
•Break up ground beef & add to fry pan. Brown ground beef.
•Once beef is browned, drain away oil & put beef in crock pot.
•Heavily re-coat bottom of fry pan with Olive Oil. Add heavy sprinkle of oregano.
•Sprinkle garlic & 2 handfuls of onion in fry pan.
•Break up sausage & add to fry pan. Brown sausage.
•Once sausage is browned, drain away oil & put sausage in crock pot.
•Mix meat well; add assorted cans of tomato products (after draining liquid out of diced tomatoes) into crock pot & mix.
•Add mushrooms, remaining onion & garlic to crock pot.
•Set crock pot to “high”; cook for 2 hours. Add sugar to remove bitterness. After 2 hours sauce should be ready but can also be left on “low” for as long as you need.
•When sauce is ready, bring water back to boil; add pasta and cook according to instructions on box.
•Drain pasta & add pasta to sauce in crock pot.
•If you wish, or if you know it is going to sit for a while (like traveling), cook pasta for only about 5-6 minutes, then drain and add to crock pot, letting it finish cooking in the sauce.
Andy was an English major; she ought to be correcting Paige’s grammer.
The proper question for seeking permission should have been, “May I take this chair upstairs?” Asking “Can I take this chair upstairs?” is questioning her own physical ability to move the chair to another location.
